Midlife, Diversification, and Inclusive Town Centres at Night

The perception that young people and youth orientated venues dominate the nocturnal city has stimulated calls on the part of government to address the exclusion of specific demographics, particularly those who are midlife. Focusing on those now aged 40-65, this paper explores how policies concerned with diversifying nightlife engage with this ageing demographic. Drawing on both scholarly and policy literature, the discussion examines how a discourse of diversity, diversification and vibrancy frame ageing and urban centres after dark. Acknowledging this demographic is under-researched, the paper brings together diverse literatures from urban planning, gerontology and sociology with a view to question the ways diversity, nightlife, and ageing are articulated and deployed in British urban policy. The paper challenges a normative concept of the life course, and a simplistic approach to place on which calls for diversifying nightlife within urban centres often rest. It concludes with a call for a framework for future research which connects place identity and demographic diversity within this cohort to inform future policy initiatives

The effect of nitrogen and phosphorus supply ratios and dilution rate on phosphorus uptake and mineralization in continuous flow microcosms

Continuous flow microcosms (50L volume, salinity 18-24 ppt) were used to examine the roles of heterotrophic protozoa and bacteria as phosphorus mineralizers. Nitrogen limitation was regulated by N:P supply ratios (5:1, 16:1) and growth rate was regulated by dilution rate (0.5, 0.25 volumes day&\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}&). Rates of carbon and phosphorus uptake from dissolved inorganic pools were determined using &\sp{14}&C and &\sp{lcub}32{rcub}&P tracer experiments and pre- and post-fractionation incubations. Based on uptake rates and on POP and POC values of the bacteria in the &\u3c&1.0 &\mu&m fraction, mass balance estimates of bacterial mineralization were determined. An isotope dilution method was used to determine phosphorus mineralization in the unfractionated sample. Heterotrophic protozoan mineralization was calculated as the difference. Results showed that bacteria had a minor role as remineralizers of phosphorus, more often taking-up inorganic phosphorus than remineralizing it. Heterotrophic protozoa were the major remineralizers of phosphorus. Microcosm treatments with a greater supply of inorganic phosphorus over nitrogen had increased POP concentrations and increased phosphorus remineralization. The effect of dilution on phosphorus remineralization was temperature dependent. Greater remineralization occurred in the high dilution rate in the July through October experiments and less remineralization occurred in the high dilution rate treatments in the December and January experiments

This article addresses the federal estate tax and federal income tax consequences of lottery winnings which flow to the estate of a decedent or, alternatively, directly to the decedent\u27s beneficiaries. State income tax and state death tax considerations must also be taken into account. With respect to these secondary implications, this article draws largely upon the Code of Virginia and the relevant sections of Virginia\u27s income tax and estate tax statutes. Some references will be made to the possibility of contrary statutory treatment in other states, but primary reliance will be upon Virginia law
